Drain holes in Hot-Dip Galvanized steel can be sealed quickly and economically without welding and the damage it will do to the galvanized surface.
Fig. 1
Typical 1/4" thick tube. (Note: Tube can
be any thickness.)
Hole on left is 1-1/16” diameter.
On right a zinc 1-1/16” diameter plug
drops approximately 2/3 into the hole.
Pressure, either hammering or hydraulic
press will force the plug further into the
drain hole.
Fig. 2
As it is driven into the hole, the malleable aluminum or zinc plug compresses and makes continuous contact with the 1/4” thick steel.
There will be some plug material showing above the steel surface. This can be removed by grinding or filing.
Fig. 3
Area shown in red circle shows
where a Vent Hole Plug has been
installed.
With proper grinding the plug will
exactly match the height of the
surrounding surface. A light coating
of galvanize spray helps the repair
completely disappear.
Note: Both Aluminum and Zinc
Vent Hole Plugs are relatively soft,
malleable materials and grind very
quickly.
Plugs are available in Aluminum or Zinc
Aluminum from 1/4” diameter to 5”
If desired, the finished work can be coated with Cold Galvanize Spray or Liquid to eliminate scratching or compromise caused by grinding.
