Oversized Clevis Rods: A Unique Order Fulfilled

Posted on Mon, Aug 10, 2020 @ 10:02 AM

If you were just starting out as a structural steel fabricator, it wouldn’t be long before you saw a tie rod, hanger rod, or cross brace assembly called for on a building plan. Typically, these assemblies are used in conjunction with a clevis, or more commonly two clevises, and a turnbuckle. While we go into depth on tie rods, clevises and turnbuckles in other articles, today we are focusing on a particularly unique clevis rod order that The Steel Supply Company fulfilled.

Hillside Washers and Bracer Rod Washers

Posted on Wed, Sep 28, 2016 @ 08:00 AM

The typical Hillside Washer, also known as a Bracer Rod Washer, is made from ductile iron and serves the purpose of providing a perpendicular surface regardless of the angle of the Turnbuckle Rod they are anchoring. As shown in the illustration, the oval surface will allow a nut and washer to seat itself at the proper angle just by the tension created when tightening the turnbuckle.

Turnbuckle and Clevis Rods: One Left Hand Thread Per Rod

Posted on Wed, Feb 03, 2016 @ 10:21 AM

The Clevis Rod and the Turnbuckle Rod offer the ability to provide tensile strength by increasing their tension as they are tightened. The tightening is done by opposingleft and right hand threaded rod connections. In the Clevis Rod drawing shown below rotating the threaded rod overhand towards the installer it will draw the two Clevises closer, creating more tension. Rotate the Rod overhand away from the installer will move the clevises away from each other, relieving tension.

Hillside Washers

Posted on Mon, Apr 27, 2015 @ 09:39 AM

Hillside Washers are used when connecting braces that pass through structural members at any angle other than 90°. Unlike inside connections requiring Clevis Rod Assemblies (Fig.1), when the brace passes through the structural member it eliminates the need for Clevises and Clevis Pins.

Stainless Steel Clevis and Turnbuckle Material and Standards

Posted on Wed, Apr 08, 2015 @ 04:15 PM

Stainless Steel Turnbuckle Rods and Clevis Rods have some variations in material that will affect the design and production. The first point to note is the difference in material between the round bar and the hardware. Stainless steel round bar comes in a wide variety of grades. For Structural and Miscellaneous steel fabricating the fundament grade is 303 or 304. Often Clevis Rod and Turnbuckle Rod assemblies are specified leaving the fabricator the option of using either.

Grinnell Standards: Clevis and Turnbuckle Rods

Posted on Wed, Mar 25, 2015 @ 10:46 AM

Grinnell Standards are a way of limiting the variables when designing a clevis rod or turnbuckle rod. While clevis rods and turnbuckle rods can be manufactured in any diameter and set of specifications, keeping it simple is always desirable for the structural steel fabricator. The main structural concern is tensile strength. Round bar diameter is the primary feature that controls tensile strength and the remaining components are designed around that.
