Epoxy Coated

To prevent rust and the resulting concrete spalling, rebar can be coated with a Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE Coating) as per ASTM A775. Known as Green Bar or ECR (Epoxy Coated Rebar).

Concrete will, over time, crack and develop pores that will allow penetration of water, oxygen, and de-icing salts and chlorides. If uncoated steel rebar (Black Bar) is used corrosion will begin eventually leading to concrete spalling.

Epoxy Coated Rebar will resist corrosive elements, and in moderate environments can provide protection for up to 50 years.

For more demanding applications the design may call for Hot Dip Galvanized or Stainless Steel Rebar. (links)
